Germany strengthens tone on China as foreign minister arrives in Beijing

Berlin:Germany’s foreign minister Johann Wadephul has arrived in Beijing for his first official visit as Berlin adopts a tougher approach toward China in trade, security and diplomatic relations. His visit comes after a previously scheduled trip was postponed earlier this year when Beijing agreed to only one of the meetings requested by Berlin.

The German government has recently increased pressure on China over trade practices, supply chain risks and access to key raw materials such as rare earths and semiconductor components. Berlin has set up a special expert panel to study economic dependence on China and recommend ways to reduce critical supply risks.

Wadephul is expected to raise concerns over China’s export restrictions, which Germany says have already affected the manufacturing and technology sectors. German and European companies have also expressed worries about rising costs and limited access to strategic materials.

The visit is part of a broader European effort to seek more balance in trade relations with China. The European Union has been preparing stricter trade rules, including possible anti dumping measures and closer scrutiny of subsidies affecting European industries.

Beyond trade, the foreign minister will also discuss global security issues. Germany wants China to use its influence with Russia in relation to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Tensions in the South China Sea and the situation in the Middle East are also expected to be part of the talks.

The visit follows similar engagements by other European leaders, including French president Emmanuel Macron. Analysts say that while Europe remains economically connected to China, recent political and security concerns are reshaping the tone of diplomacy.

Wadephul’s meetings in Beijing are scheduled to continue through Tuesday, and both sides are expected to issue official statements once the talks conclude.
