Panaji: A devastating fire believed to have been triggered by electric firecrackers tore through the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora late Saturday night, killing 25 people. The flames spread rapidly after the firecrackers reportedly ignited the wooden ceiling during a late evening event, trapping many people inside as smoke filled the building. Among the victims were five tourists, while the majority were staff members working at the venue.
Six others are receiving treatment in hospitals with injuries linked to burns and smoke inhalation. Rescuers say several people were found near the staircases and basement exits where there was little room to escape.
Police have filed a case of culpable homicide and arrested four senior employees from the establishment. A wider investigation is underway to assess whether the nightclub followed proper fire safety norms. Local government officials responsible for approvals have also been suspended.
Authorities have sealed the nightclub and related outlets owned by the same group after initial inspections showed safety violations. Emergency teams have now begun checking other nightclubs and entertainment spots across Goa to prevent similar incidents.
Financial support has been announced for the families of those who lost their lives. The identification process has been completed and arrangements for transporting bodies to home states are ongoing.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant called the incident shocking and said the government will enforce strict safety guidelines for clubs and public entertainment venues. The tragedy has sparked serious concerns over safety compliance in Goa’s popular nightlife sector.
