Trump security roadmap leaves out North Korea, sparking new talk of diplomacy

Washington: A new US security strategy released by the Trump administration has left out any reference to North Korea, raising questions and cautious hopes that Washington may be preparing for a fresh round of diplomacy with Pyongyang.

For more than two decades, every major US security roadmap has identified North Korea’s nuclear weapons development as a major threat. The absence of the issue in the latest document marks a significant shift from earlier positions held by both Republican and Democratic governments.

Some analysts believe the omission could be intentional and may signal an attempt to reopen diplomatic channels with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Supporters of this view say a softer tone could create space for possible negotiations in the coming year.

At the same time, US officials have insisted that the country’s long standing goal of a nuclear free Korean Peninsula has not changed. South Korean authorities echoed this position but said they are closely monitoring how North Korea reacts to the change in language.

North Korea has declared itself a permanent nuclear state and has repeatedly said that any future talks must recognise its nuclear capability. Earlier this year, North Korea carried out several missile tests, including cruise and ballistic launches, which regional governments viewed as provocative.

The broader security context in Asia is also shifting. South Korea is moving ahead with a plan to develop nuclear powered submarines with US support. The step has been criticised by North Korea, which claims it threatens regional stability.

Experts say much now depends on how Pyongyang interprets the new US position. Some fear the silence could be seen as a weakening of pressure, while others believe it could open a rare window for dialogue.

Regional governments and security analysts will be watching for any official response from North Korea in the coming days. Whether the omission leads to renewed diplomacy or a continued cycle of military posturing remains uncertain.
