Pope says United States Europe alliance remains vital as Holy See works quietly on Ukraine issues

Castel Gandolfo: Pope Leo said on Tuesday that the long standing alliance between Europe and the United States may be facing changes and stressed that this partnership remains important both today and in the future. He made the remarks while speaking with journalists in Castel Gandolfo, where he also confirmed that the Holy See is working quietly to help bring back Ukrainian children taken to Russia.

Pope said he had seen parts of the peace plan for Ukraine presented by United States mediators. While he did not comment directly on the details, he warned that certain elements appear to signal a major shift in what has long been a strong transatlantic alliance. He noted that recent comments made about Europe seem aimed at weakening this bond, which he believes should continue to play a major role in global stability.

On the same day, Pope Leo received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Villa Barberini in Castel Gandolfo. He said the Vatican continues its efforts to help return Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia, although progress remains slow and much of the work must be carried out discreetly. He assured that the Holy See continues to push for their safe return to their families.

Pope repeated his readiness to offer the Holy See as a place for talks or negotiations related to the conflict. He said the offer has not yet been accepted but stressed that the Vatican remains available to support any path that could lead to a just and lasting peace.

Commenting on President Zelenskyy’s renewed invitation for him to visit Ukraine, Pope Leo said he hopes such a visit will be possible, although he cannot say when. He added that it is necessary to be realistic when considering such a trip.

Speaking on Europe’s position in the peace process,  Pope said the unity of European countries is essential. He argued that reaching a peace agreement without including Europe is unrealistic, as the war is taking place on European soil. He said Europe must remain involved in discussions on future security guarantees.

Reflecting on his recent trips to Türkiye and Lebanon, Pope Leo spoke about his visit to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. He described the moment as one of silent prayer and deep respect. When asked about comments suggesting he had not prayed visibly, he responded with humor, saying that silence is also a form of prayer and that his preferred place of prayer is before the Blessed Sacrament in a Catholic church.

Finally, Pope addressed questions about when he will move into the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace. He said he is living comfortably in his current residence at the Palace of the Holy Office and that no date has been set for any move.
