Nato chief warns allies they could be Russia’s next target

Berlin: Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that European allies must take the threat from Russia more seriously, saying that countries in the alliance could become Moscow’s next targets if they do not strengthen their defenses.

Speaking at a security forum in Berlin, Rutte said that Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine shows that Europe cannot assume long term peace. He urged member states to invest more in defense and increase weapons production, stressing that Nato needs to be ready for any future challenges. He noted that Russia could be capable of using military force against Nato within a few years if the alliance does not improve its preparedness.

Rutte’s comments come as Ukraine continues diplomatic efforts to pursue peace. Kyiv has recently handed a revised peace proposal to the United States, outlining steps it believes could help end the conflict. At the same time, world leaders are holding urgent discussions about how to support Ukraine while ensuring security across Europe.

Russia has dismissed Nato’s concerns. The Kremlin said it has no intention of attacking Nato countries or rebuilding the former Soviet Union, calling Western fears unfounded.

Despite these reassurances, European officials say they must be cautious and ready. Rutte said Nato’s unity and commitment to defense spending are essential to prevent further instability and protect the continent.

The warning reflects growing tension as the war in Ukraine continues and as Nato countries debate how best to respond to Russia’s actions.
