Kyiv: A new draft peace proposal being discussed by the United States, Ukraine and European partners suggests that Ukraine could become a member of the European Union as early as 2027, according to recent reports. The plan, first highlighted by the Financial Times and later referenced by Reuters, is part of wider negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia.
The proposal outlines a fast tracked timeline for Ukraine’s EU entry, a move that would significantly speed up the usual membership process. European officials have not yet confirmed the plan and some EU countries are said to be cautious about approving such a rapid accession, especially while the conflict continues.
The draft also includes other elements linked to a possible settlement, such as new security guarantees for Ukraine and plans for rebuilding the country. According to reports, Russia has shown little interest in the ideas currently being discussed, including suggestions related to the status of occupied territories and possible economic arrangements.
Talks between Ukraine and the United States are expected to continue, with Kyiv preparing updated proposals to present to its partners. European leaders are also working on financial support measures. The European Union is considering an indefinite freeze on billions in Russian central bank assets to unlock more funding for Ukraine.
The discussions remain at an early stage and no final agreement has been reached. Observers say the path forward will depend heavily on the positions of EU member states and the reaction from Moscow. However the possibility of Ukraine receiving a clear path to EU membership is seen as one of the strongest incentives for moving closer to a peace deal.
The coming weeks are likely to involve further exchanges between Washington, Kyiv and European capitals as they try to shape a political framework that could bring the long running conflict to an end.
