Sydney: Australian police on Tuesday said a father and his adult son were responsible for the deadly shooting at a Hanukkah gathering near Sydney’s Bondi Beach, an attack that has so far claimed 16 lives and shocked the nation.
Investigators said the shooting was a targeted act that took place during a community celebration attended by families, children and elderly members of the Jewish community. The father was shot dead by police at the scene, while the son was seriously wounded and remains in hospital under police guard.
Authorities confirmed that dozens of people were injured in the attack, with several still in critical condition. Two police officers were also wounded while responding to the incident. Emergency services said the quick response helped prevent further loss of life.
Police are continuing to examine the background and movements of the attackers, including whether there were warning signs ahead of the assault. Homes linked to the suspects have been searched as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials said there is no indication of a wider or immediate threat to the public.
Security has been tightened across Sydney and other major Australian cities, particularly around religious sites and public events. Police said the measures are precautionary and aimed at reassuring communities.
Across the country, grief has turned into public solidarity. Candlelight vigils were held at Bondi Beach and in several cities, with mourners laying flowers and lighting candles in memory of the victims, including a child.
Government leaders and community representatives have renewed calls for unity, saying the attack must not deepen fear or division. Support services and counselling have been expanded for victims, families and witnesses as Australia continues to mourn one of the deadliest attacks in its recent history.
