Vatican City: Alessandro Gisotti, the Deputy Editorial Director of Vatican Media, has been elected President of the Radio and Audio News Group of the European Broadcasting Union. He takes over the role from German journalist Stephanie Pieper of Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg.
Gisotti represents Vatican Radio, which is a founding member of the European Broadcasting Union. He began his career at Vatican Radio in 2000 and has been part of the Radio and Audio News Group since 2021. His election reflects his long experience in radio journalism and his active involvement in international media cooperation.
The Radio and Audio News Group brings together directors, journalists and producers from public broadcasters across Europe. The group focuses on editorial standards, ethical values and best practices in radio and audio journalism. It meets several times each year to discuss major trends, including the growing impact of new technologies on news and media.
Speaking after his election, Gisotti said he was deeply honoured to take on the responsibility. He noted that the group has offered him valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues from leading public radio organisations in Europe.
Gisotti stressed that radio continues to play a vital role even in the age of artificial intelligence. He said radio offers reliable information and a strong connection with communities, something that technology and algorithms cannot replace. He also warned that this role is especially important at a time when false news and disinformation are spreading widely, particularly on online platforms.
The European Broadcasting Union is marking its 75th anniversary this year and today includes 113 public broadcasting organisations from 56 countries, underlining the continued importance of collaboration in public service media across Europe.
