New Delhi: Indian renewable energy company ReNew Energy Global has signed a long term agreement with Google to develop a 150 megawatt solar power project in Rajasthan marking a major step in corporate clean energy use in India.
The project will be built and operated by ReNew and is expected to be commissioned in 2026. Once operational the solar plant is estimated to generate about 425000 megawatt hours of electricity every year which is enough to meet the annual power needs of hundreds of thousands of households.
Under the agreement Google will procure the environmental attributes from the project. This will help the technology giant reduce its carbon footprint in India and support its global commitment to operate on carbon free energy around the clock by 2030. The deal also reflects the growing trend of large multinational companies directly sourcing renewable energy in fast growing markets like India.
ReNew said the agreement strengthens its commercial and industrial clean energy portfolio which has now reached around 2.7 gigawatts. The company is among India’s largest renewable energy producers with projects across solar wind and hybrid energy segments.
Rajasthan was chosen for the project due to its high solar potential and existing infrastructure for large scale renewable energy development. The state already hosts some of the country’s biggest solar installations and continues to attract new investments in clean power.
The partnership comes at a time when India is pushing hard to expand its non fossil fuel power capacity as part of its climate commitments. Solar energy is expected to play a key role in helping the country meet its long term targets while also supporting corporate sustainability goals.
Industry observers say deals like this highlight how corporate demand is becoming an important driver of renewable energy growth in India alongside government led initiatives.
