Miami: A senior Russian envoy is travelling to the United States for talks with key figures close to President Donald Trump, as Washington intensifies diplomatic efforts to explore an end to the war in Ukraine through multiple channels.
Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and a special representative of President Vladimir Putin, is expected to meet US envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner in Miami, according to sources familiar with the matter. The meetings underline renewed behind the scenes engagement between Moscow and Washington, even as major differences over the future of Ukraine remain unresolved.
The discussions come days after US led consultations in Berlin involving Ukrainian and European officials, aimed at refining a possible peace framework. Dmitriev is not expected to meet Ukrainian negotiators during his US visit, highlighting the continued separation between Russian and Ukrainian tracks in the diplomatic process.
The Trump administration is pursuing parallel talks, with Witkoff also holding consultations with national security advisers from Ukraine, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. US officials say the goal is to test areas of possible compromise while keeping close coordination with European allies.
Washington has acknowledged that some progress has been made in recent exchanges, but officials caution that significant gaps remain. Russia continues to oppose any future NATO membership for Ukraine and insists on recognition of territory it controls, conditions that Kyiv has repeatedly rejected.
Ukraine, for its part, has launched a fresh round of talks with US officials focused on security guarantees and long term stability. Ukrainian leaders have stressed that any peace deal must respect the country’s sovereignty and internationally recognised borders.
Analysts say the involvement of figures such as Witkoff and Kushner reflects President Trump’s preference for unconventional diplomacy, mixing official channels with trusted personal envoys. However, they also warn that the lack of direct Russia Ukraine engagement limits the chances of a quick breakthrough.
With the conflict nearing its fourth year, diplomatic activity is increasing, but expectations remain cautious. For now, the Miami meetings are seen as another step in a complex and uncertain effort to bring the war closer to an end.
