Indians caught in Ukraine war: Over 200 recruited into Russian forces, 26 killed

New Delhi: More than 200 Indian nationals have been recruited into the armed forces of Russia to fight in the ongoing war with Ukraine, and at least 26 of them have been killed since the conflict began in 2022, the Ministry of External Affairs told Parliament.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the ministry said that Indian missions have so far identified around 202 Indians who joined the Russian military. According to official information shared by Russian authorities, 26 Indians have lost their lives while seven others are reported missing.

The government said sustained diplomatic efforts have helped secure the release of many Indians from military service. So far, 119 Indians have been discharged and brought back home. Around 50 Indian nationals are still believed to be serving in the Russian forces, and discussions are continuing to facilitate their early return.

The ministry noted that in several cases, Indians were allegedly lured with promises of jobs or education opportunities and later found themselves deployed in combat zones. Indian authorities have raised these concerns with the Russian side and sought humane treatment, early discharge, and repatriation of those affected.

To help identify those killed or missing, India has shared DNA samples and other personal details with Russian officials. The government said it remains in close contact with families and continues to pursue all possible channels to resolve pending cases.

The Ministry of External Affairs has once again warned Indian citizens against accepting overseas job offers linked to military service, calling such arrangements risky and potentially fraudulent. It advised Indians to verify employment opportunities carefully and avoid situations that could put their lives in danger.

The issue has drawn growing concern as the Ukraine conflict enters its fourth year, with families of affected Indians urging faster action to bring their loved ones back safely.
