Kannur: Christmas carries a lasting message of standing together with those who are often left out in life’s journey, said Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany of Thalassery. He was delivering the Christmas message at the ecumenical Christmas celebration organised by the Ecumenical Fellowship at Stadium Corner in Kannur.
Reflecting on the angels’ song at the birth of Jesus, “Glory to God in the highest and peace to people of goodwill on earth,” the Archbishop said this remains the true message of Christmas for all times. A person of goodwill, he explained, is one who is sensitive to the pain and struggles of others. Only such people can spread peace in society.
He noted that social divisions and unrest often arise when people believe only their religion or political view is right. Calling on everyone to work together to remove such negative attitudes, the Archbishop urged people to build harmony and mutual respect.
Kannur Bishop Alex Vadakkumthala, in his message, said that when Jesus was born in a manger, it became a sacred place open to everyone. He also stressed the need to continue development activities that truly benefit people, recalling efforts to repair damaged roads and improve public welfare.
Auxiliary Bishop of Kottayam, Mar Joseph Pandarasseril, said Christmas is about giving hope, not spreading despair. He said those who feel discouraged in life can regain hope when there are people who walk with them, listen to them, and support them.
The celebration was inaugurated by P. Indira, former Deputy Mayor and Mayor designate. She said the beauty of a town lies in keeping its surroundings clean and called for collective efforts to bring positive change by bringing together people with abilities and goodwill.
Sr. Anjali, Dr. Scaria Kalloor, Fr. Vinod, and Fr. Jomon Chempakasseril also spoke on the occasion. Fr. Noble Mathew welcomed the gathering and Fr. George Mathew delivered the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with a variety of cultural performances.
