Moscow: Russia and Syria held high level diplomatic talks in Moscow on Tuesday as both countries sought to strengthen political, military and economic cooperation at a time of growing regional uncertainty.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met his Syrian counterpart Asaad al Shaibani for discussions confirmed by Russia’s foreign ministry. The meeting highlighted the continuing close relationship between Moscow and Damascus.
The talks were part of a broader visit by a senior Syrian delegation to the Russian capital. Along with the foreign minister, the delegation included Syria’s defence minister and senior security officials, indicating that the discussions went beyond diplomacy and covered defence and security cooperation.
According to officials familiar with the visit, the meetings focused on strengthening military coordination, expanding economic ties and advancing reconstruction efforts in Syria. Russia has remained a key political and military partner for Syria and continues to play an important role in its security and rebuilding plans.
The Moscow meetings also took place against the backdrop of renewed tensions inside Syria. In recent days, clashes and political disagreements involving Kurdish led forces in northern Syria have raised concerns about stability. Regional actors, including Turkey, have urged progress on talks between Damascus and Kurdish groups, warning that delays could worsen the situation.
For Russia, the talks underscored its intent to maintain influence in Syria and support the country’s leadership during a sensitive period. For Syria, the visit signalled a push to secure continued Russian backing as it faces internal challenges and seeks economic recovery.
Neither side released detailed statements on the outcomes of the meetings, but officials indicated that further cooperation and follow up discussions are expected in the coming weeks.
