Kyiv: Ukraine has presented a revised 20 point peace proposal aimed at ending the war with Russia as discussions continue with the United States during a critical phase of the conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the plan reflects Ukraine’s key demands while keeping the door open for a negotiated settlement supported by international partners. The proposal is being discussed with the administration of US President Donald Trump but has not yet received final approval.
Ukrainian officials say the plan calls for full respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and strong security guarantees backed by the United States and European allies. Ukraine has made it clear that it wants to keep a strong national army and does not accept any plan that would weaken its defence.
The proposal also includes humanitarian steps such as prisoner exchanges the return of displaced civilians and the protection of vital infrastructure. It outlines large scale international support for rebuilding the country with economic assistance expected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars in the years ahead.
Several major issues remain unresolved. These include the future of eastern regions currently under Russian control and the status of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant which is occupied by Russian forces. Ukraine has rejected any arrangement that would allow Russia to take part in managing the plant.
Russia has not yet given a formal response to the proposal. At the same time fighting has continued. In recent days missile and drone attacks have hit Kyiv and other cities causing civilian casualties and damaging power and heating systems during winter.
President Zelenskyy said the attacks underline the need for real and lasting security guarantees and warned that peace efforts cannot move forward while civilians are being targeted. He stressed that any agreement must prevent renewed aggression and ensure long term peace.
Diplomats say the coming days will be important in deciding whether the proposal can move from discussions into formal negotiations involving Russia. Ukraine has said it remains committed to diplomacy while continuing to defend its territory until a fair and lasting peace is achieved.
