New Delhi: Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region remained on high alert on Monday as dense to very dense fog continued to blanket the city, sharply reducing visibility and disrupting daily life. The warning was issued by the India Meteorological Department as visibility dropped to near zero in several areas during the early morning hours.
The thick fog caused major disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, where many flights were cancelled or delayed due to poor visibility. Airline operators advised passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport, warning that delays could continue if weather conditions do not improve. Some incoming flights were also diverted as safe landing became difficult during peak fog hours.
Road traffic across Delhi moved slowly as drivers struggled with limited visibility. Vehicles were seen using headlights even after sunrise, and traffic police urged commuters to drive carefully and avoid unnecessary travel during early morning hours. Rail services were also affected, with several long distance trains running behind schedule.
Along with fog, air pollution added to the problem. The air quality index in many parts of the city slipped into the very poor to severe category, raising health concerns. Doctors advised children, elderly people and those with breathing problems to limit outdoor activity and use protective masks if stepping outside.
According to the weather department, low wind speed, high moisture levels and cold temperatures are creating ideal conditions for fog formation. Minimum temperatures in the city hovered around eight to ten degrees Celsius, further worsening the situation.
The weather office said fog is likely to persist over the next few days, especially during night and early morning hours, though visibility may improve slightly during daytime. There is also a possibility of light rain around the New Year, which could bring temporary relief from fog and pollution.
Authorities have asked residents to stay alert, follow traffic advisories and keep track of weather and travel updates as Delhi continues to battle harsh winter conditions.
