New Delhi: Air travel in the national capital was badly affected on tuesday as dense fog and poor visibility led to the cancellation of 148 flights at delhi airport, causing major inconvenience to passengers on new year’s eve.
Officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport said flight operations were disrupted during the early morning hours when visibility dropped sharply due to thick fog. Both incoming and outgoing flights were cancelled, while many others were delayed for several hours.
Airlines issued alerts requesting passengers to check the latest flight status before heading to the airport. They also advised travellers to remain in touch with airline staff, as weather conditions continued to change rapidly.
The weather department said the fog was the result of cold winter conditions combined with high pollution levels across the region. Visibility in some areas fell to near zero, making safe landing and takeoff difficult.
Apart from air travel, road and rail transport were also affected in parts of the city. Trains ran late, and traffic moved slowly during the morning hours.
Airport authorities said operations improved gradually as visibility increased later in the day, but warned that similar disruptions could continue during the winter season if foggy conditions persist.
