India steps up evacuation of citizens from Iran amid crisis and flight disruptions

New Delhi: India has intensified efforts to evacuate its citizens from Iran as the security situation remains tense and normal travel continues to be disrupted. Communication blackouts and the suspension of several international flights have made the evacuation process challenging, officials said.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian government has been working round the clock through its embassy in Tehran to ensure the safety of Indians stranded across different parts of Iran. Many citizens, including students and professionals, were initially moved to safer locations within the country before arrangements were made for their exit.

The evacuation operation gained momentum after Iran’s airspace was partially reopened for special flights. In other cases, Indian nationals were assisted to cross land borders into neighbouring countries such as Armenia and Turkmenistan, from where they were flown back to India.

Officials confirmed that several thousand Indians have already been brought home under the special operation launched in response to the crisis. Those evacuated include students, workers, women, children and overseas citizen card holders. The first groups to arrive in New Delhi included medical students who described a tense atmosphere and uncertainty during their stay in Iran.

The evacuation drive was affected by frequent internet shutdowns and poor mobile connectivity inside Iran, which made it difficult for families in India to contact their relatives. Flight suspensions across the region, linked to wider tensions in West Asia, also delayed travel plans and required constant changes in routing.

The Indian government has advised citizens who are still in Iran to remain indoors as much as possible, avoid crowded areas and stay in regular touch with the Indian Embassy. A fresh advisory has also urged Indians to avoid non essential travel to the country until the situation stabilises.

Officials said coordination with local authorities and friendly countries would continue to ensure that all remaining Indian nationals who wish to return home can do so safely.
