Ferry sinks off southern Philippines, 15 confirmed dead and dozens still missing

Manila: At least 15 people have been confirmed dead and dozens are still missing after a passenger ferry capsized and sank off the southern Philippines early on Monday, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.

The ferry, M V Trisha Kerstin 3, was travelling from Zamboanga City to Jolo Island in Sulu province when it went down near Basilan province shortly after midnight. Officials said the vessel was about one nautical mile from shore when the accident happened.

The ferry was carrying about 332 passengers and 27 crew members. Rescue teams said more than 300 people have been pulled from the water. Survivors were taken to ports in Isabela City and Zamboanga, where they received medical care.

Search and rescue operations are continuing in the area. Coast guard ships, navy vessels, military aircraft and local fishing boats are taking part in the effort to find those still missing.

Authorities said the ferry was not overloaded and was within its allowed passenger limit. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. Officials are checking possible mechanical problems and other technical issues.

The Philippines relies heavily on ferries for travel between its many islands. Accidents at sea are not uncommon, especially during rough conditions or when safety rules are not strictly followed.

Families of passengers are waiting for news as rescue teams continue their work. Officials said they will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
