Xi calls India a friend and partner as China seeks warmer ties

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping said China and India are friends and partners, sending a positive message as both countries try to improve relations after years of tension.

In a message to Indian President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of India’s Republic Day, Xi said ties between the two neighbours had continued to improve and develop. He used the image of the dragon and the elephant dancing together to describe cooperation between the two largest countries in Asia.

Xi said China was ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with India and work for stable and healthy relations.

The message comes despite long standing problems between the two sides, especially over their disputed Himalayan border. In 2020, soldiers from both countries were killed in a clash, leading to the worst crisis in relations in decades. Since then, the two sides have held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks to reduce tensions.

In recent months, both countries have taken cautious steps toward normalising ties. Direct flights have been gradually restored and business contacts have increased. India is also considering easing some restrictions placed on Chinese companies after the 2020 clash.

However, differences remain. China has challenged some of India’s industrial incentive schemes at the World Trade Organization, and trade competition between the two countries continues. Indian industries have also raised concerns about heavy dependence on Chinese imports.

The wider global situation is also shaping the relationship. India is deepening its economic and strategic ties with the United States, while China is facing pressure from Western countries. This has made both Beijing and New Delhi more careful in managing their differences.

Xi’s statement signals that China wants to keep the relationship on a calmer path, even as unresolved border issues and economic disputes remain in the background. Observers say future high level meetings and progress in trade talks will show whether the friendly words lead to stronger cooperation.
