ASEAN urged to stand by international law amid regional tensions

Manila: The Philippines has called on ASEAN countries to strictly follow international law as tensions continue to rise in parts of Asia and beyond. The appeal came as foreign ministers from the 10 member nations met in the Philippines to discuss key regional challenges.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo said peace and stability depend on respecting rules that apply to all countries. He warned that unilateral actions and the use of force threaten the global order and could weaken trust between nations. He added that ASEAN must remain firm in defending international law to protect smaller states and avoid conflicts.

The meeting focused on several major issues facing Southeast Asia. One of the top concerns is the South China Sea, where overlapping claims and frequent maritime incidents have increased tensions. ASEAN members agreed that disputes should be handled through dialogue and peaceful means.

Another important topic was the crisis in Myanmar. ASEAN leaders repeated that they do not recognize elections held under military rule. Myanmar’s military government has been barred from sending top leaders to ASEAN meetings because of its failure to restore democracy and stop violence. Diplomats said efforts will continue to push for talks between all sides in Myanmar.

The gathering also discussed the need for stronger cooperation on regional security and economic stability. Officials said unity among ASEAN nations is essential at a time when global politics is becoming more divided.

By hosting the meeting, the Philippines aims to strengthen ASEAN’s role as a neutral platform for dialogue and to promote respect for international law as the foundation of regional peace.
