Modi praised for US trade deal as opposition questions impact on agriculture

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been praised by members of his party for securing a major trade deal with the United States, even as opposition leaders warn that the agreement could hurt farmers and the agriculture sector.

Supporters of the government say the deal will boost India’s exports and improve access to the American market. They point to reduced tariffs on Indian goods as a key gain that could help manufacturers and exporters who have struggled under high duties in recent months.

The agreement follows talks between Modi and US President Donald Trump. It is meant to ease trade tensions and strengthen economic ties between India and the United States.

Government leaders in India say the deal protects sensitive sectors. They have assured Parliament that agriculture and dairy products will not be opened up to unfair competition from American imports. According to officials, safeguards remain in place to protect farmers and rural livelihoods.

However, opposition parties are not convinced. They argue that the government has not shared full details of the agreement and want clarity on which products will face lower tariffs. Some lawmakers fear that cheaper imported farm goods could weaken local markets and reduce incomes for small farmers.

Economists say the deal could bring long term benefits if it leads to higher exports and more foreign investment. At the same time, they caution that any changes affecting agriculture must be handled carefully, as farming supports millions of families across India.

Business groups have largely welcomed the agreement, saying it could revive trade that slowed during the period of high tariffs. Exporters in textiles, engineering and pharmaceuticals expect better access to the US market.

The government has said more information about the agreement will be shared in Parliament soon. Until then, the deal remains both a political achievement for Modi and a point of debate over its possible impact on India’s farming community.
