Islamabad: Russia has taken a clear step towards strengthening its relationship with Pakistan after President Vladimir Putin offered support, including cooperation on security matters, following a deadly attack in Islamabad.
In a message sent to Pakistan’s leadership, Vladimir Putin strongly condemned the suicide bombing that struck a mosque in the Pakistani capital during prayers. The attack killed more than 30 people and injured over 160 others, making it one of the deadliest incidents in the city in recent months. Putin described the violence as a barbaric act of terrorism and expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families.
The Russian president said Russia stood in solidarity with Pakistan and was ready to provide assistance, including cooperation in counterterrorism and security related areas. He underlined Russia’s willingness to share experience and strengthen joint efforts against extremist threats.
Pakistan welcomed the message, viewing it as a sign of growing international support at a time when the country continues to face serious security challenges. Officials said Islamabad remains committed to fighting terrorism and values cooperation with partners who are willing to support peace and stability in the region.
The security offer also comes amid broader efforts by Moscow and Islamabad to improve ties. In recent years, the two countries have increased engagement in areas such as energy, trade, defence dialogue and regional connectivity. Russian officials have repeatedly described relations with Pakistan as constructive and mutually beneficial, while Pakistani leaders have highlighted the importance of diversifying international partnerships.
Diplomatic contacts between the two sides have picked up pace. High level meetings and exchanges are expected to continue, with discussions likely to focus on security cooperation, economic opportunities and regional developments, including the situation in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Russia’s outreach to Pakistan is notable given its long standing close relationship with India. Analysts say Moscow is now pursuing a more balanced approach in South Asia, seeking stronger ties with multiple regional players as global power dynamics evolve.
Observers note that Putin’s response to the Islamabad attack goes beyond a routine diplomatic message. By explicitly offering security cooperation, Russia appears to be signalling its intention to play a more active role in regional stability and to deepen its partnership with Pakistan in the coming period.
