Statewide shutdown as buses stop running and shops close during nationwide trade union strike

Thiruvananthapuram: Normal life was severely affected in Kerala on Wednesday as a nationwide strike called by central trade unions led to a near complete shutdown across the state. Public transport services were off the roads, shops remained closed and daily activities were disrupted from early morning.

Buses operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation did not run in most parts of the state. Private buses also stayed away from service, leaving thousands of commuters stranded. Autorickshaws and taxis were largely absent from city roads, adding to the difficulties faced by office workers and students.

Markets, small shops and business establishments downed their shutters in many towns and cities. Only a few essential outlets opened for limited hours. Government offices reported low attendance, while some departments warned employees that absence from duty could be treated as leave without pay.

The strike is part of a larger protest observed across India. Trade unions have raised concerns over recent labour reforms and economic policies, claiming they weaken workers’ rights and job security. Farmer groups and some political organisations have also extended support to the protest.

While Kerala witnessed one of the strongest impacts, other states reported partial disruptions depending on local participation. In several regions, public transport services were reduced and demonstrations were held in district centres.

Banks and educational institutions functioned in some places but faced difficulties due to transport issues. Authorities clarified that essential services such as hospitals, emergency care and utilities would continue to operate without interruption.

Police were deployed in sensitive areas to prevent untoward incidents. No major violence was reported by afternoon, though scattered protests and road blockades were seen in a few districts.

The 24 hour strike began at midnight and is expected to continue until midnight tonight. Officials have urged the public to remain calm and avoid unnecessary travel while the protest is in force.
