Nearly 300000 people left without power and water in Odesa after Russian attack

Odesa: Nearly 300000 people were left without electricity and water in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa on Wednesday after a large scale Russian attack damaged key energy facilities, Ukrainian officials said.

According to Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, the overnight strikes severely hit power infrastructure in the Black Sea port city. Around 200 residential buildings were also left without heating at a time when winter temperatures remain low, raising serious concerns for families, elderly people and children.

The attack on Odesa was part of a broader wave of missile and drone strikes launched by Russia across several regions of Ukraine. Explosions were reported in the capital Kyiv as well as in the city of Dnipro.

In Dnipro, about 10000 consumers lost heating after energy facilities were damaged. Local authorities said several people were injured in different regions, including in Kyiv, where residential and non residential buildings were hit. Fires were also reported in Odesa following the strikes.

Emergency teams are working to restore electricity and water supplies. Officials said engineers are assessing the damage and using backup systems where possible, but full repairs could take time due to the scale of destruction.

Since the start of the war, energy infrastructure has been a repeated target. Ukrainian authorities say such attacks place heavy pressure on civilians, especially during winter, when heating and water services are essential.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, fighting and air strikes continue in several parts of the country. For residents in Odesa and other affected cities, the immediate concern remains access to basic services and safety as repair crews race to bring power back.
