Europe looks to deepen ties with India to correct past strategic mistakes

Munich: Europe is seeking closer cooperation with India as part of a broader effort to reshape its global partnerships, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said during discussions at the Munich Security Conference.

He acknowledged that Europe made a strategic mistake in the past by distancing itself from major emerging powers, including India and Brazil. He said these countries share democratic values and common interests with Europe and should be treated as important partners rather than kept at a distance.

Wadephul stressed that India has become a key global player whose influence is growing in international governance, security and economic development. Strengthening ties with New Delhi, he said, will help Europe build stronger alliances in a changing geopolitical environment.

The renewed focus comes at a time when Europe is reassessing its foreign policy priorities amid tensions with Russia, complex relations with China and uncertainty in transatlantic ties. European leaders believe expanding partnerships with trusted democracies such as India can help create a more balanced and stable global order.

Economic cooperation between India and the European Union has also gained momentum. Negotiations toward a comprehensive free trade agreement are advancing, while mobility and migration arrangements are expected to create more opportunities for students and skilled workers. Both sides are also increasing collaboration in green energy, digital technology and industrial innovation.

Security cooperation is another growing area of engagement. Europe and India are working together on maritime security, counterterrorism efforts, cybersecurity and emerging technologies. India’s role in the Indo Pacific region is viewed as vital for safeguarding trade routes and maintaining regional stability.

Analysts say Europe’s outreach reflects recognition of India’s rising economic strength and strategic importance. By strengthening relations with New Delhi, Europe aims to diversify partnerships, reduce dependence on any single global power and reinforce a rules based international order.

The shift signals a new phase in Europe India relations, with deeper diplomatic engagement, expanded trade and closer security cooperation expected in the years ahead.
