New Aadhaar card design aims to boost privacy and security

New Delhi: India is preparing to introduce a redesigned Aadhaar card that focuses on protecting personal data and reducing identity misuse. Reports indicate that the new card format will display only the holder’s photograph and a secure QR code, removing visible personal details such as the name, address, date of birth, and the 12 digit Aadhaar number.

The change is being planned by the Unique Identification Authority of India as part of efforts to strengthen privacy and prevent fraud. At present, photocopies of Aadhaar cards often reveal sensitive information, which can be misused for identity theft and unauthorized transactions. By removing printed details, authorities aim to limit the exposure of personal data.

Under the proposed system, verification will be carried out by scanning the QR code on the card. The code will securely store the individual’s details, allowing authorized agencies to confirm identity digitally without displaying private information in public view.

The redesign also supports India’s growing shift toward digital verification. A new Aadhaar mobile application is expected to allow users to store their identity digitally, share details securely, and control what information is shared during verification. Features such as QR based sharing, biometric locking, and facial authentication are intended to make the process safer and more convenient.

Officials believe the updated design will help curb cyber fraud and unauthorized use of Aadhaar data while improving trust in digital identity systems. Aadhaar is widely used across India for banking, government services, telecom connections, and welfare benefits, making data protection a key priority.

While the new card format has been widely reported and preparations are underway, full rollout details and timelines are yet to be officially confirmed. Existing Aadhaar cards will continue to remain valid, and digital verification options are expected to expand gradually.

The proposed redesign marks a significant step toward strengthening privacy and modernizing identity verification in the world’s largest biometric identification system.
