Suspect appears in court over deadly attack at Bondi Beach Hanukkah gathering

Sydney: Naveed Akram appeared before a Sydney court on Monday in connection with the Bondi Beach Hanukkah attack that stunned the nation last year.

The 24 year old appeared via video link from a high security prison. He faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder, multiple counts of attempted murder and a terrorism offence. He has not yet entered a plea.

Monday’s hearing dealt mainly with legal protections for victims and witnesses, including orders to protect their identities. The case was adjourned and Akram is scheduled to return to court in April.

The attack took place on December 14, 2025, when gunmen opened fire on Jewish families gathered for a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Fifteen people were killed and dozens were injured, in an incident that shocked Australia and drew condemnation from leaders around the world.

Police allege Akram carried out the attack with his father, Sajid Akram, who was shot dead by officers at the scene.

Authorities say the assault was driven by extremist ideology and antisemitism. Investigators continue to examine how the attackers became radicalized and whether warning signs were missed.

The tragedy prompted heightened security across Australia, particularly around Jewish schools, synagogues and community centers. The government also launched a royal commission to examine antisemitism and the circumstances surrounding the attack, along with reviews of intelligence and policing procedures.

Community leaders continue to call for unity and vigilance, while families of the victims await justice as the legal process moves forward.
