Pope urges Salesians to continue serving young people in poverty and conflict zones

Rome: Pope Leo XIV has praised the Salesian community for their dedication to young people and encouraged them to continue their mission in places marked by war, conflict and poverty.

Pope made the remarks on Sunday during a pastoral visit to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Rome’s Castro Pretorio neighbourhood, a parish entrusted to the Salesians of Saint John Bosco and located near Terminii train station.

Speaking warmly to the religious community, Pope Leo expressed gratitude for their global mission, noting that they serve in places “where there is war, where there is conflict, where there is poverty, where Jesus wants to be present.” He said their work reflects the closeness of Christ and the Church to those in need.

Pope’s light hearted tone drew laughter when he recalled visiting a Salesian community as a young man before joining the Augustinians. “You came in second place I am sorry,” he joked.

He reflected on the Gospel passage displayed at the ambo, which speaks of the many signs performed by Jesus that are not written in Scripture.  Pope told the Salesians that their service is one of those living signs, written in the heart of Jesus through their work among the poor and vulnerable.

Pope Leo highlighted the richness of the Salesian charism, especially their commitment to education and youth ministry across many countries. He pointed to the parish’s outreach in Rome, including Italian language classes that help young migrants and foreigners integrate into society. In a moment of humour, he remarked that he might join the classes himself.

After celebrating Mass,  Pope also met with the parish pastoral council. He described the basilica as a spiritual home for the constant flow of pilgrims and travelers passing through the nearby station. He said the heart of the city and the Heart of Jesus meet in this place, where mercy is lived through charity, welcome and accompaniment.

Pope thanked the parish community for working together in a spirit of unity and shared responsibility. He described their collaboration as a sign of the Church walking together and expressed hope for future visits.

Founded through the vision of Saint John Bosco and supported by Popes Pius IX and Leo XIII, the basilica continues to serve as a centre of faith and charity in the heart of Rome.
