Mumbai model threat triggers high alert along India’s coast

New Delhi: Indian security agencies have stepped up coastal surveillance and internal security measures after Pakistan based militant group Lashkar e Taiba issued a warning suggesting a sea based terror strike similar to the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The threat message, reportedly linked to Lashkar e Taiba operatives, referred to repeating the “Mumbai model,” a reference to the 26 November 2008 attacks in which terrorists entered Mumbai by sea and carried out coordinated shootings and bombings that killed more than 160 people.

Intelligence officials are examining a video message attributed to Lashkar e Taiba deputy chief Saifullah Kasuri, in which he warned of a maritime attack and claimed militants would dominate the sea in 2026. Security experts believe such messages often serve propaganda and psychological purposes, but authorities are treating the warning seriously.

Following the alert, the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and coastal police have intensified patrols along the western coastline. Surveillance of fishing vessels, small boats, and landing points has been strengthened, while port authorities have been directed to tighten inspections.

Major coastal cities, including Mumbai, have been placed under heightened vigilance. Intelligence agencies are coordinating with state police units to monitor suspicious movements and communications. Security presence has also increased at crowded public places, transport hubs, and religious sites.

Officials say India significantly strengthened maritime security after the 2008 attacks by installing coastal radar networks, improving vessel tracking systems, and establishing integrated monitoring centers. These systems are now being actively used to track maritime activity and detect unusual movements.

Security analysts note that threat rhetoric often increases during periods of heightened counter terror operations and regional tensions. Authorities have emphasized that there is no confirmation of an imminent attack, but precautionary measures are necessary to prevent any attempt to infiltrate coastal areas.

Officials have urged the public to remain alert and report suspicious activity while continuing daily life without panic. Security agencies say they remain prepared to respond to any threat and are maintaining close surveillance across coastal and urban areas.
