US and Ukraine discuss rebuilding plans in Geneva

Geneva: Officials from the United States and Ukraine met in Geneva on Thursday to discuss how the war torn country can be rebuilt once fighting with Russia ends, even as peace negotiations remain uncertain.

The meeting brought together Ukrainian representatives and senior US envoys to explore long term reconstruction plans and economic cooperation. The talks focused on rebuilding damaged cities, restoring energy systems, repairing transport networks and reviving industry after years of destruction.

Ukraine is seeking massive international investment to support recovery. Estimates from global institutions suggest reconstruction costs could exceed hundreds of billions of dollars. Ukrainian officials have indicated the country may need close to 800 billion dollars over the next decade to fully rebuild infrastructure and restore economic growth.

The discussions are part of wider diplomatic efforts led by Washington to prepare for a potential peace settlement. While negotiations aimed at ending the war continue, key disagreements remain over territory and security guarantees.

Planning reconstruction before a ceasefire is seen as a way to reassure Ukrainians and attract future investors. The proposed economic cooperation framework aims to strengthen Ukraine’s economy and reduce reliance on emergency aid by encouraging private investment and long term development partnerships.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, the security situation remains fragile. Fighting and drone attacks continue, underscoring the urgency of preparing for recovery while the conflict is still ongoing.

The Geneva talks signal a shift from short term wartime support toward long term rebuilding and economic stability, as Ukraine and its allies look beyond the battlefield to the country’s future.
