Joy and hope greet announcement of Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming journeys

Vatican City: Countries in Europe and Africa have responded with gratitude and enthusiasm following the Vatican’s announcement of Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming apostolic journeys. Civil leaders and Church authorities say the visits will strengthen faith, encourage peace and deepen dialogue.

The Holy See Press Office confirmed that Pope will visit Monaco on March 28. From April 13 to 23 he will undertake a ten day journey across Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea. A week long visit to Spain is scheduled from June 6 to 12, including Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands.

In Algeria, Catholic bishops expressed deep joy and described Pope as an apostle of peace. They said the visit will encourage the small Catholic community and strengthen dialogue between Christians and Muslims. The journey also follows the spiritual legacy of Saint Augustine, who was born in the region. Bishops called on the faithful to prepare through prayer and dialogue with others.

In Cameroon, Church leaders and citizens view the visit as a sign of hope amid political and security challenges. Authorities have already begun improving infrastructure, including airport facilities, to ensure the success of the visit. Church leaders expect the journey to strengthen faith, promote peace and draw attention to humanitarian needs.

Spain has also welcomed the announcement with celebration and gratitude. Church authorities in Madrid described the visit as a source of hope and communion and have already begun extensive planning. A diocesan commission is coordinating pastoral and logistical preparations, while parishes and schools are encouraged to prepare spiritually through prayer and reflection.

Barcelona officials and the Sagrada Familia construction committee expressed appreciation for Pope’s planned visit to the basilica during events marking the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudi’s death. Spain last hosted a pope in 2011.

In Monaco, both the royal family and the local Church called the visit a historic honor. It will be the first visit of a reigning pope to the principality. Leaders highlighted the long standing ties between the Holy See and the Grimaldi family and emphasized shared commitments such as respect for human life, care for creation and social responsibility. Prince Albert II said the visit will be a strong sign of hope, dialogue and peace.

Across the countries preparing to welcome him, Pope Leo XIV’s journeys are widely seen as moments of encouragement and unity, offering spiritual renewal and strengthening bonds between peoples and faith communities.
