Delhi court clears Kejriwal and Sisodia in excise policy case

New Delhi: A special court in Delhi has acquitted former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the high profile excise policy case, bringing a major turn in a controversy that has dominated Indian politics for several years.

The Rouse Avenue Court discharged the two leaders along with several others, stating that the evidence presented by the Central Bureau of Investigation was insufficient to proceed with the charges. The court observed that the prosecution failed to establish criminal conspiracy or wrongdoing and noted gaps in the investigation.

The case was linked to Delhi’s 2021 to 2022 excise policy, which was later withdrawn amid allegations that it gave undue benefits to liquor vendors and caused financial losses to the government. Investigators had also alleged kickbacks and policy manipulation, claims that the accused consistently denied.

After the verdict, Kejriwal became emotional while speaking to reporters and said the truth had prevailed. He maintained that he was innocent and described the case as politically motivated. Supporters and party leaders welcomed the decision and called it a victory for justice, while political opponents have yet to issue a unified response.

The case had triggered significant political upheaval since 2022 and drew national attention, especially after Kejriwal’s arrest in 2024 while serving as chief minister.

Legal experts say the matter may not be fully closed, as investigating agencies could challenge the ruling in a higher court.

For now, the verdict offers relief to the Aam Aadmi Party leadership and marks a significant moment in one of India’s most closely watched political and legal battles.
