Mojtaba Khamenei appointed as Iran’s new supreme leader

Tehran: Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, ending days of uncertainty about who would lead the Islamic republic.

The decision was taken by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, a council of senior clerics that is responsible for choosing the supreme leader. Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the position on March 8 and becomes the third supreme leader since the Islamic revolution in 1979.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who ruled Iran for more than three decades, died on February 28 during a period of intense tension in the Middle East. His death came as the region faced escalating military confrontations involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

Mojtaba Khamenei is a Shia cleric who studied at the religious seminary in the holy city of Qom. Although he has never held a public political office, he has long been seen as an influential figure within Iran’s political and religious system.

For years he was believed to have played a key role behind the scenes and maintained close ties with powerful institutions such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Analysts say this influence helped him gain support among important figures in the country’s leadership.

His appointment has drawn mixed reactions. Some supporters say his leadership will ensure stability and continuity during a difficult time for Iran. Others, however, have raised concerns that the transfer of power from father to son resembles a hereditary succession.

The Islamic republic was established after the 1979 revolution that overthrew the monarchy, and the idea of leadership passing within a family has been debated by critics.

Mojtaba Khamenei takes office at a time of rising regional tensions and growing fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. Observers say the decisions he makes in the coming months could shape Iran’s relations with other countries and influence the future of the region.
