US warns citizens in Nigeria about possible terrorist threat

Washington: The United States has warned its citizens in Nigeria about a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and institutions in the country.

In a security alert issued on Tuesday, the US Embassy in Abuja said it had received information about potential threats against locations linked to the United States. These include the US Embassy in Abuja, the US Consulate General in Lagos, and schools connected to American institutions.

The embassy advised US citizens living in or visiting Nigeria to remain alert and take extra precautions when visiting these locations. It also urged people to stay aware of their surroundings, avoid large gatherings, and change their travel routes and schedules when possible.

Officials said the advisory was issued out of caution but did not provide detailed information about the nature of the threat or who might be behind it.

The embassy added that its diplomatic missions in Nigeria remain open and that it is working closely with Nigerian security agencies to monitor the situation.

The warning comes at a time of growing global tension after recent military strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Security analysts say such developments sometimes raise concerns about possible retaliatory actions against US interests around the world.

Nigeria has faced security challenges for years, including attacks by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and other armed groups operating in different parts of the country.

US authorities said citizens should continue to monitor official security updates and follow the guidance of local authorities while in Nigeria.
