Baghdad US embassy compound hit by missile as tensions rise in region

Baghdad: A missile struck the United States embassy compound in Baghdad on Saturday, raising fresh concerns about security in Iraq as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.

Security sources said the missile landed inside the heavily fortified embassy complex located in Baghdad’s Green Zone. The projectile reportedly hit an area near a helipad inside the compound, sending smoke into the air and triggering security alerts in the area.

There were no immediate reports of casualties and the extent of the damage was not immediately clear. Iraqi officials said security forces were investigating the incident.

The attack comes at a time of growing regional tensions involving the United States and Iran. Iraqi security sources believe the missile may have been launched by Iran backed militia groups that operate in Iraq, although no group has immediately claimed responsibility.

The Green Zone, which houses foreign embassies and Iraqi government buildings, has been a frequent target of rocket and drone attacks in recent years. Facilities linked to the United States have often been targeted by armed groups aligned with Iran.

The strike also comes shortly after strong warnings from Washington over disruptions to shipping lanes and tensions linked to Iran’s oil network. Analysts say such incidents could further increase instability across the region.

Iraqi authorities said they are monitoring the situation and working to identify those responsible for the attack. Security has also been tightened around diplomatic missions in Baghdad following the incident.

The United States embassy has not yet issued a detailed statement on the attack, but officials are closely assessing the situation. Observers warn that any escalation between Washington and Tehran could have wider consequences for security across the Middle East.
