Taiwan warns of growing China threat calls for strong deterrence

Taipei: Taiwan has warned that China remains a serious and immediate threat and said stronger deterrence is needed to prevent any possible invasion. The statement came from Defence Minister Wellington Koo, who stressed that the island must be prepared as military pressure from China continues to rise.

He said China’s military activities near Taiwan have not stopped and are part of a wider strategy to increase pressure without direct conflict. These include frequent air and naval operations close to the island, which Taiwan sees as a warning signal.

Taiwanese officials believe that building strong defence capabilities is the best way to avoid war. The aim, they say, is to make any attack too costly and risky for China to consider. As part of this effort, Taiwan is planning a major increase in defence spending, including upgrades to weapons systems and military training.

China continues to claim Taiwan as its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control. However, recent assessments from the United States intelligence community suggest that Beijing may not be planning an immediate invasion. Despite this, Taiwan has made it clear that it cannot afford to lower its guard.

At the same time, China has also been using economic and political measures to influence Taiwan, presenting options for closer ties while maintaining military pressure. This dual approach has added to concerns in the region.

The situation has drawn attention from countries across the Indo Pacific, with several nations strengthening their own security measures. Analysts say the tensions are likely to continue as both sides prepare for a long period of uncertainty.

Taiwan’s message remains clear that peace can only be maintained through readiness and strong defence, as it seeks to prevent conflict while protecting its sovereignty.
