NATO Pulls Out of Iraq Mission as Iran War Escalates, Forces Shifted to Europe

Brussels: Amid intensifying conflict across the Middle East, the NATO has withdrawn all personnel from its military advisory mission in Iraq, relocating hundreds of troops to Europe as the war involving Iran continues to destabilize the region.

The decision marks a significant strategic shift for the alliance, which had maintained a non-combat training and advisory presence in Iraq for years. According to officials, the withdrawal was carried out in response to escalating security risks linked to the widening Iran conflict and its spillover effects across the Gulf.

Senior NATO commander General Alexus Grynkewich confirmed that all personnel involved in the mission numbering several hundred have been safely relocated. He expressed gratitude to Iraqi authorities and allied nations for facilitating the secure transfer, while praising the professionalism of the troops who continued operations under increasingly volatile conditions.

The mission, which primarily focused on strengthening Iraqi security institutions through training and advisory support, will now be operated from a NATO base in Naples. Despite the physical withdrawal, officials emphasized that the alliance remains committed to supporting Iraq’s defense capabilities remotely.

The pullout comes as multiple NATO member states including Poland, Spain, and Croatia—have also scaled back or withdrawn their military presence in the region, citing growing dangers tied to the Iran war and broader instability in the Gulf.

While NATO has described the move as a necessary precaution prioritizing troop safety, it underscores mounting concerns over the expanding conflict’s reach. The war has already triggered military buildups, disrupted energy routes, and heightened fears of a wider regional confrontation.

Even as forces withdraw from Iraqi soil, NATO has reiterated that its political engagement and long-term cooperation with Iraq will continue. However, the relocation signals a more cautious posture by the alliance as it navigates an increasingly unpredictable security landscape shaped by the ongoing Iran conflict.
