Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese heckled inside Sydney mosque during visit

Sydney: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced strong heckling during a visit to Lakemba Mosque in Sydney, as a section of the crowd openly protested against him during Eid celebrations.

The prime minister, who attended the gathering as a guest, was confronted by some worshippers who shouted criticism and accused him of supporting actions linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The protest created a tense moment inside the mosque, even as a large number of attendees remained calm.

Witnesses said the anger came from people who felt disappointed with the government’s position on international issues, especially the Middle East situation. The slogans raised were sharp and direct, reflecting deep frustration among some members of the community.

Security personnel quickly intervened and removed at least one protester to control the situation. No violence or injuries were reported, and the event continued without further disruption.

Albanese later said only a small group was responsible for the protest and maintained that most people present were respectful. He also suggested that some anger could be linked to the government’s move to ban certain extremist organisations.

However, reports indicate that the protest was largely driven by dissatisfaction over foreign policy rather than domestic security measures.

The Lebanese Muslim Association, which organised the event, defended the decision to invite the prime minister. Community leaders said dialogue with elected representatives is necessary, even during times of disagreement.

The incident highlights growing tensions within sections of the Muslim community in Australia, where concerns over global conflicts and national policies are increasingly being voiced in public spaces.
