Pope Leo XIV expresses concern for suffering Christians and victims of war

Vatican City: At the start of Holy Week, Pope Leo XIV has called on the global Church to remember those who are suffering, especially Christians in the Middle East who are unable to fully celebrate the sacred days due to ongoing conflict.

Speaking at the conclusion of Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter’s Square,  Pope said that as the Church reflects on the Passion of Christ, it must not forget those who are living through real pain and hardship today.

He highlighted the situation of Christians in the Middle East, saying their suffering should awaken the conscience of the world. According to Pope, many believers in the region are facing serious difficulties and are unable to take part in Holy Week celebrations because of war.

He urged the faithful to remain united in prayer for those affected by violence and called on everyone to seek peace. He invited people to pray to Christ, the Prince of Peace, asking for strength for wounded communities and for real paths toward reconciliation.

Before leading the Angelus prayer, Pope also remembered seafarers affected by war. He prayed for those who have died, those who have been injured, and their families, reminding the world that the earth, sky, and sea are meant for life and peace, not conflict.

In his final appeal, Pope Leo XIV asked for prayers for migrants who have died at sea, especially those who recently lost their lives near the Greek island of Crete.

His message set a solemn tone for Holy Week, focusing on compassion, solidarity, and the urgent need for peace in a world marked by suffering.
