South Korea and Indonesia deepen ties with focus on energy and technology

Seoul: Lee Jae Myung and Prabowo Subianto held a summit in Seoul on Wednesday, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in energy, minerals and advanced technology as both countries respond to growing global uncertainties.

The leaders announced a series of agreements that aim to expand economic and strategic ties, with a strong focus on securing stable energy supplies. South Korea depends heavily on energy imports, while Indonesia is a key exporter of coal and liquefied natural gas.

Officials said the two countries will launch a high level energy dialogue to ensure steady supply chains and reduce the risk of disruptions. The move comes at a time when global energy markets remain uncertain due to tensions in the Middle East.

In addition to energy, both sides signed agreements covering critical minerals, clean energy, financial cooperation and data centre development. These sectors are seen as important for future industries such as batteries, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.

Trade between the two countries has been growing steadily, reaching about 18.3 billion dollars in 2025. Leaders said the partnership combines South Korea’s technological strength with Indonesia’s natural resources and expanding market.

The two countries also agreed to widen cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure, shipbuilding and nuclear energy. Cultural exchanges are also expected to increase under the expanded partnership.

On defence, both sides reaffirmed their ongoing collaboration, including the joint development of the KF 21 fighter jet project. Discussions are also continuing on Indonesia’s possible purchase of the aircraft and future defence cooperation.

The agreements signal a broader effort by both nations to build stronger economic and strategic links at a time when countries around the world are seeking secure supply chains and reliable partners in key industries.
