Myanmar parliament to vote for new president amid political tensions

Yangon: Myanmar’s parliament is set to elect a new president on Friday in a move that could reshape the country’s leadership but is already drawing strong international attention.

Lawmakers from both houses, along with military appointed representatives, will gather in the capital to vote for the country’s next head of state. The president will be chosen from three candidates nominated by different groups within parliament.

The most closely watched candidate is Min Aung Hlaing, the former military chief who led the 2021 coup that removed the elected government. He recently stepped down from his military post after many years in command and has entered the race through a vice presidential nomination.

Many analysts believe he is likely to win, as the military continues to hold significant influence in parliament through its appointed members and allied political groups.

The election follows last year’s general vote, which brought a military backed party to power. That election was widely criticised by international observers and opposition groups, many of whom said the process was not free or fair. Several opposition parties either boycotted the vote or were barred from participating.

Myanmar has remained deeply divided since the 2021 coup, with ongoing conflict in many parts of the country. Thousands of people have been killed and many more displaced as fighting continues between the military and resistance groups.

In a recent development, a close ally of Min Aung Hlaing has taken over as the new military chief. This change is seen as part of a planned shift that allows him to move into a civilian leadership role while maintaining strong influence over the country’s power structure.

The upcoming vote is being presented as a step towards a civilian government. However, many observers believe the military will continue to play a central role in Myanmar’s political future regardless of the outcome.
