Kerala heads to polls as campaign ends and voters prepare to decide

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to enter a crucial phase in its democratic process as campaigning for the 2026 Assembly elections has come to an end.

The state now moves into a silent period, with voters preparing to cast their votes and decide the future government.

The Election Commission has enforced a 48 hour silence period ahead of polling. During this time, political parties are not allowed to hold public meetings, rallies, or campaign activities. Leaders and workers from outside constituencies have also been asked to leave, ensuring a calm atmosphere before voting.

Polling will be held on April 9 across all 140 constituencies in a single phase. Authorities have made extensive arrangements to ensure smooth and peaceful voting, with security tightened in sensitive areas.

The election is expected to witness a strong contest mainly between the Left Democratic Front, the United Democratic Front, and the National Democratic Alliance. Several constituencies are seeing close triangular fights, making the outcome difficult to predict.

Around 2.7 crore voters are eligible to take part in this election. For any alliance to form the government, it must secure at least 71 seats in the Assembly.

Strict monitoring is in place to prevent violations of the model code of conduct. Officials have warned that any attempt to influence voters during the silence period will invite serious action.

Meanwhile, dry day restrictions have been imposed in the state as part of election regulations, and all preparations are in place for polling day.

The counting of votes will take place on May 4, when Kerala will finally know the verdict of the people. Until then, all eyes remain on the voters as the state stands ready to shape its political future.
