Vietnam’s top leader To Lam wins state presidency and gains expanded authority

Hanoi: To Lam, the most powerful leader in Vietnam, has been elected as the country’s new state president, further strengthening his control over the government and the ruling system.

Lam already holds the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which is the highest office in the country. With his new role as president, he now combines both party leadership and state authority, a model similar to the system followed in China.

The National Assembly approved his appointment with full support, reflecting strong unity within the political structure. This rare consolidation of power marks a shift from Vietnam’s usual practice of collective leadership, where responsibilities are shared among several top leaders.

Observers say this new arrangement gives Lam a China style mandate, allowing him to take faster decisions and push major policies more effectively. It may help the government respond quickly to economic and global challenges.

However, some analysts have also expressed concern that concentrating power in one leader could reduce internal checks and balances within the system.

After assuming office, Lam outlined his vision for Vietnam’s future, focusing on economic growth driven by technology, innovation, and digital transformation. He aims to move the country beyond its dependence on low cost manufacturing and build a more advanced economy.

Vietnam is expected to continue its balanced foreign policy, maintaining relations with major powers while protecting its independence.

With this move, Vietnam enters a new phase of leadership, where decision making may become more centralised under a single figure.
