Church voices concern over freezing of accounts under FCRA

Kochi: Mar Joseph Pamplany has raised serious concerns over the freezing of church related bank accounts in India, calling it a violation of civil rights and a threat to democratic values. He said that actions taken under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act are affecting not only religious institutions but also the wider society.

According to him, several church linked accounts have been frozen and in some cases properties have also been taken over without clear explanations from authorities. He questioned the lack of transparency and said such measures create fear among organisations involved in social and charitable work.

The archbishop rejected claims that churches are major beneficiaries of foreign funds. He explained that much of the money associated with church institutions comes from priests and nuns working abroad. He also said that there are already legal provisions to act against any misuse of funds, and there is no need for excessive control.

The issue comes at a time when there is growing debate over proposed changes to the FCRA law. Christian groups and civil society organisations have expressed concern that new amendments could allow the government to take greater control over institutions, including their funds and assets.

Political leaders have also reacted strongly. M K Stalin described the proposed changes as harsh and warned that they could affect schools, hospitals and welfare institutions that depend on foreign contributions to serve the poor.

At the same time, there are indications from the central government that the bill may not be pushed forward immediately and that concerns raised by different groups will be reviewed.

The debate around the FCRA continues to grow, with supporters saying it is needed to regulate foreign funding, while critics argue that it risks limiting the freedom of religious and social organisations across the country.
