Vatican City: The Vatican has appointed Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão to a key role in its global media office, marking a significant step in giving greater voice to the Church in Asia.
Cardinal Ferrão, who is the Archbishop of Goa and Daman, has been named a member of the Dicastery for Communication, the department that oversees all Vatican media platforms including news, radio, and digital communication.
The appointment means the Indian cardinal will now take part in shaping how the Catholic Church communicates its message to people around the world. The dicastery plays an important role in guiding Vatican News and other media services that reach millions globally.
Church observers say the move reflects the Vatican’s growing focus on including leaders from Asia, Africa, and other regions in major decision making roles. It also highlights the increasing importance of India and the wider Asian Church in global Catholic life.
Cardinal Ferrão is currently the president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences and also leads the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India. He has been known for promoting unity, participation, and mission focused communication within the Church.
He was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2022 and has since taken on several responsibilities at the international level.
The latest appointment is seen as part of the Vatican’s broader effort to strengthen its communication in a rapidly changing digital world while ensuring that voices from different cultures and regions are represented.
