Beijing and Taipei face renewed tension as China sends warplanes during political outreach

Beijing: Tension around Taiwan increased on Saturday as China sent 16 warplanes near the island on the same day President Xi Jinping met a senior Taiwanese opposition leader in Beijing.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said the Chinese aircraft entered areas close to its airspace, continuing a pattern of military activity that has raised concern in recent months. The flights were closely monitored by Taiwan’s forces.

At the same time in Beijing, Xi held talks with Cheng Li-wun, a senior figure from Taiwan’s opposition party. During the meeting, Xi repeated China’s long standing position that it will not accept any move towards Taiwan independence.

Cheng described her visit as an effort to promote peace and reduce tensions across the Taiwan Strait. She said dialogue is important to avoid conflict and maintain stability.

However, Taiwan’s government reacted cautiously. Officials in Taipei said China is sending mixed signals by combining military pressure with political outreach. They stressed that Taiwan’s future can only be decided by its people.

The development highlights a growing divide within Taiwan’s politics. While opposition leaders support engagement with Beijing, the current government has taken a firmer stance against China’s claims over the island.

Recent days have also seen an increase in Chinese military presence around Taiwan, including more naval ships and aircraft. Analysts believe this is part of a broader strategy by Beijing to pressure Taiwan while also trying to build influence through dialogue.

The situation remains sensitive as Taiwan continues to be a major point of tension in the region, with global powers watching closely.
