Drone strike hits Odesa as fragile easter ceasefire begins

Kyiv: A deadly drone attack struck the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa just hours before a temporary Easter ceasefire was due to begin between Russia and Ukraine, raising fresh doubts about the chances of even a short pause in fighting.

Local officials said at least two civilians were killed and several others were injured when Russian drones hit residential areas. Buildings, including homes and a kindergarten, were damaged in the overnight attack, leaving families shaken and rescue workers searching through debris.

The strike came as Vladimir Putin announced a 32 hour ceasefire to mark Orthodox Easter. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would respect the truce but warned that any violations would be met with a response.

Despite the ceasefire announcement, the intensity of the war was clear. Ukraine reported that around 160 drones were launched overnight across different regions, though many were intercepted. Russia also said it had shot down several Ukrainian drones over its territory and Crimea.

At the same time, there was a rare sign of cooperation between the two sides. Russia and Ukraine carried out a prisoner exchange involving nearly 350 people. Ukrainian authorities said some of those released were civilians, offering relief to families who had been waiting for their return.

Still, the latest attack has deepened skepticism in Ukraine about Russia’s intentions. Similar ceasefire promises in the past have often been followed by continued fighting. Many Ukrainians fear that the truce may not hold, especially as drone attacks and air strikes have become more frequent in recent months.

Odesa, a key Black Sea port, has been repeatedly targeted, highlighting its strategic importance in the war. The growing use of drones by both sides has made it harder to protect cities and has increased the risks for civilians.

There are some signs that the ceasefire could open a small window for talks, but major disagreements remain. For now, the situation on the ground suggests that even moments of peace are uncertain, and the war continues to cast a long shadow over daily life.
