Abduction of students shocks Nigeria as gunmen attack bus in Benue

Makurdi: Fear and uncertainty have spread across Nigeria’s Benue state after gunmen attacked a passenger bus and abducted a group of students who were travelling to sit for university entrance examinations.

The incident happened along the Otukpo Makurdi road, a route that has seen repeated security concerns in recent years. The victims were among passengers on a commercial bus when armed men stopped the vehicle and took them away to an unknown location.

Local reports indicate that about 14 people were on board, though officials have not confirmed the exact number of those kidnapped. The identities and condition of the victims are still unclear.

The attack has deeply troubled many in the country, especially because the victims were young students on their way to pursue their education. Families are now waiting anxiously for news about their loved ones.

Benue state governor Hyacinth Alia strongly condemned the attack, calling it a painful reminder of the ongoing insecurity affecting ordinary citizens. He assured the public that security agencies have begun search operations and are working to rescue those taken.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and support ongoing investigations.

This incident highlights the continuing problem of kidnappings in parts of Nigeria, especially in central and northern regions. Armed groups often target travellers, students, and rural communities, demanding ransom in exchange for release.

In recent years, several mass kidnappings of schoolchildren have drawn national and international attention. While some victims have been rescued, others have remained in captivity for long periods, leaving lasting fear among families and communities.

The latest attack shows that even routine activities like travelling for exams are no longer safe in some areas. It raises fresh concerns about the safety of students and the need for stronger measures to protect citizens.

As security forces continue their efforts, many Nigerians are hoping for the safe return of the abducted students and a lasting solution to the crisis that has disrupted so many lives.
