Kerala to declare Thrissur fireworks tragedy a state disaster, judicial inquiry ordered

Thrissur: The Kerala government has decided to declare the deadly fireworks explosion in Thrissur as a state disaster, as grief and shock continue to spread across the region. The decision comes as the scale of the tragedy becomes clearer, with more families coming to terms with their loss.

The explosion took place at a fireworks storage unit in Mundathikode in Thrissur district, where materials were being prepared for festival celebrations. A sudden blast triggered a series of explosions, leaving widespread destruction in the area. At least 14 people have lost their lives, while several others are being treated for serious injuries, including severe burns.

In response, the state cabinet led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered a judicial inquiry to find out what caused the accident and whether there were lapses in safety measures. A commission headed by a retired judge will examine the incident in detail and submit its report.

The government said declaring the incident a state disaster will help speed up relief efforts and ensure better support for victims and their families. Authorities have announced financial assistance of 14 lakh rupees for the families of those who died. Those injured will receive compensation based on the severity of their condition, and the government has promised to cover all medical expenses, including treatment in private hospitals if required.

Rescue teams have been working continuously at the site, clearing debris and helping identify victims. Officials said some bodies were badly damaged, making identification difficult and requiring scientific methods such as DNA testing.

Many of the injured remain in critical condition in hospitals, and doctors are closely monitoring their recovery. Families have gathered outside medical centres, waiting for updates about their loved ones.

The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about fireworks safety in Kerala, especially during major festivals. Questions are being asked about how such a large quantity of explosive materials was stored and handled, and whether existing rules were properly followed.

Local residents described the moment of the blast as terrifying, with loud explosions shaking homes and flames quickly spreading through the area. Several nearby houses were also damaged, adding to the distress of the community.

As the state begins to mourn the loss, there are growing calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future. The government has assured that those responsible, if found guilty of negligence, will face strict action.

For now, the focus remains on supporting the victims and their families, as Kerala comes together in grief after one of its most painful recent tragedies.
