Vellore Diocese Strengthens Clergy Resilience Through Psycho-Spiritual Renewal Initiative

Vellore: In a meaningful effort to support the holistic well-being of its clergy, the Diocese of Vellore conducted a two-day ongoing formation programme aimed at fostering psycho-spiritual health among priests. The initiative reflects a growing recognition within the Church of the need to address emotional and spiritual balance amid the increasing pressures of pastoral ministry.

The programme, held from April 20 to 21 at Sneha Deepam in Alamelarangapuram, was guided by the theme “Psycho-Spiritual Integration: From Burnout to Cherishing.” It provided diocesan priests with a dedicated space for reflection, renewal, and deeper engagement with the psychological and spiritual challenges they encounter in their vocation.

The inaugural session was led by Bishop Ambrose of Vellore, in the presence of Msgr. M. John Nicholas, the Vicar General, along with other diocesan leaders. Addressing the gathering, Bishop Ambrose highlighted the importance of nurturing both the mind and spirit, particularly in a ministry that often demands constant emotional and pastoral availability. He encouraged priests to perceive burnout not as a weakness, but as a call to rediscover strength through a deeper union with Christ. Stressing that effective ministry flows from inner harmony and emotional maturity, he described the programme as a grace-filled opportunity for personal renewal and transformation.

The sessions were facilitated by Fr. S. S. Sahayaraj OFM Cap., who guided participants through a series of reflections and exercises focused on self-awareness, emotional healing, and spiritual integration. Through his inputs, priests were encouraged to identify early signs of burnout, engage honestly with their inner experiences, and align their psychological well-being with their spiritual calling.

The programme also included interactive elements such as group discussions, personal sharing, and reflective practices. Set in the tranquil surroundings of Sneha Deepam, the environment allowed participants to step away from their routine responsibilities and immerse themselves in a process of renewal and introspection.

The formation programme concluded on April 21 with a Eucharistic celebration. In his homily, Fr. Sahayaraj urged the clergy to remain deeply rooted in Christ while maintaining inner balance in their lives and ministry. He called on them to continue their pastoral mission with renewed enthusiasm, compassion, and clarity. He also appreciated the Diocese of Vellore for initiating such a timely and necessary programme that addresses the comprehensive well-being of priests.

The active involvement of diocesan leadership throughout the programme underscored the priority given to ongoing formation and pastoral care of clergy. This initiative reflects the Diocese’s commitment to forming priests who are not only spiritually grounded but also emotionally resilient recognizing that a well-integrated inner life is essential for sustaining meaningful and effective ministry.
